Dear Silo Ink customer,

Over the past 4 months, Silo Ink has been challenged and stretched beyond the limits of the business.  At Macworld back in January, 2011, we were overwhelmed with success and ended up with many bottles of ink (including your order) on back order.  The refill ink was slated to arrive the first week in April.  When it arrived, we did some quality testing on the ink, and the batch was not up to our standards.  Victoria and I had an emergency meeting to discuss immediate steps forward.

It was a grim situation, but we buckled down and did what we knew was in the best interest of our customers.  We would NOT send out the ink, and would immediately re-order a new batch of ink.  We knew the flak that we would get from our customers, as it was poor customer service and even worse business practice.  At the end of the day, all we kept telling ourselves was that we are doing the right thing by adhering to Silo Ink’s uncompromising high quality standards for each of our valuable customers.

Today, you are receiving the remaining products from your order in early 2011.  As you begin using our ink, we hope that you can fully associate the benefits with the money you saved, the quality of your prints, and the sustainability of this product.

On behalf of the entire Silo Ink team, we truly apologize for the long delay in getting our products out to you.  The learning from this experience has humbled all of us, and we have ramped up our quality control procedures to prevent catastrophes like this from happening again.  Your trust is something we hope to regain over time.  If you have any questions or feedback for us, please feel free to email us at sales@siloink.com.

Thank you,

Tik Yip
Vice President of Marketing

My 8-6

8 am.: Monday Morning. I walk into the doors of Silo Ink with a positive attitude and a radiant smile. How can I be unhappy when I am living my dream job with a company that aligns with my morals and aspirations in life?

October 4th, 2010: The day that I joined Silo Ink forever changed my life. My journey with this refillable ink cartridge company started with a sincere invitation from a friend and the Vice President of the company: Mr. Tik Yip.

Coming from a corporate culture with PepsiCo for four years, walking into this new start up office was quite the change. With heavy hesitation and inability to decide if I wanted to begin a career with Tik as business partner, I had to ask him the golden question: “Why should I choose to work here at Silo Ink?” Unlike many other business executives that I have dealt with trying to sell me their company, Tik took quite a different approach. He said: “Let me tell you how Silo Ink began” ….

What started with a research project had turned into the progressive company that Silo Ink is today. From the research project, He had realized how ink was one of the most expensive liquids in the world and had also discovered that ink jet industry served on a “razor blade” business model. Concerned with Mother Nature, he also saw the significant amount of plastic waste produced from ink cartridges. As a consumer himself, he was fused with energy and determination to create a product that save other consumer (like himself) money, save the Earth without jeopardizing quality print results. After more research and development, Silo Ink began.

After this story, I was sold.

With blessed and humbled success from 4 years of Sales Management at PepsiCo: Frito Lay, I knew my strength was in sales & marketing. Without hesitation I confirmed my decision to join the company that very day and here is why:

I saw that this company started from a genuine place. Tik started Silo Ink from the frustration of paying for ridiculously priced cartridges himself and seeing his passion and determination to create change in the world was inspiring. His energy and excitement for his company was contagious to say the least.

I also knew Silo Ink would be an easy sell to any target audience. Much like Michael Jackson and Celine Dion, there is not much need for marketing or ‘selling’ to their artistry: their amazing talent speaks for itself.

Four months after and three successful tradeshows later, I can confidently say this: Silo Ink is a star performer in its class of contenders. Simply Google search our company and let your results be the judgment on my previous statement.

Along with our amazing Silo Ink cartridges, I am also blessed to have talented and outstanding people as business partners. Every thought and idea brought to the table at work is treated with respect and appreciation. We stand by each other to celebrate each blessed win and pick each other up when results are undesirable. That, in itself, makes my time spent at Silo Ink even more priceless.

6pm: Monday Evening. I walk out of the front door at Silo Ink with a great smile. Feeling accomplished and productive with excitement to do this all over again at 8am tomorrow morning….. Yes, excitement to come to work again.

MacWorld SF 2011

The show began this morning at 10am and we have been blessed with genuinely interested customers all day long. Each customer was curious about “the last ink cartridge they’ll ever buy”. With extremely attractive pricing along with the phenomenally high quality prints that SiloInk cartridges produced, creating excitement around at our booth was not a challenging task. Silo Ink refillable cartridges and our outstanding concept were really the celebrity at our booth. We were simply the voices for these products.

Consumers were amazed at the quality of Silo Ink’s printed product. We have continued our research and development over the past few years to ensure the highest quality of ink for our consumers. The end result was the discovery of a manufacturer in Germany that produces ultra premium grade ink that exceeded our expectations. Gone are the days of syringes and funnels and pressuring methods. Silo Ink refill bottles were created with customized nozzles that fits perfectly into the refilling hole on the cartridges, making this one of the simplest process in the refillable ink market.

With genuine customers’ interest alongside a team of, dedicated and extremely warm staff, Mac World 2011 became one of our most successful consumer tradeshow in the history of Silo Ink. I am passionate about Silo Ink because it aligns with my moral and ethical values. Silo Ink provides product that are high in quality along with significant cost savings while creating green sustainability. We are humbled for the blessed business and continuous interest from every single last one of our customers. Further more, we are glad to be apart of an ongoing process to help save Mother Earth.

Silo Ink ranked #4 in top 10 coolest products at CES!

Here’s the Silo Ink exerpt.  The whole article is linked below!

“Once in awhile I find something that REALLY saves money.  During this past year, my favorite color laser printer of all time … BROKE!  Fixing it was too expensive so I bought an HP OfficeJet Pro.  GREAT printer!  But it’s InkJet.  It’s a really FAST inkjet printer but …it’s “inkjet.”  I hate inkjet.  Everyone knows that the printers are essentially free, because the ink is the most expensive fluid of any kind, on EARTH.  But now, along comes Silo Ink.  What a cool concept!  This is the very first real innovation I ever saw with inkjet resupply.  The norm is to refill inkjet cartridges.  Silo came up with a much better concept.  They mount an ink reservoir on the outside of the printer…and refill the RESERVOIR, not the cartridge.  The reservoir fills the cartridge.  See that picture?  Those 4 big ink bottles…the “silos” if you will… are the ink reservoirs that sit outside the printer feeding FIFTEEN TIMES MORE INK to the printer than what the cartridge holds!  Bottom line:  I pay $102 for the setup you see at the left.  But at Costco, a 2-cartridge pack of just one color is $68.00.  Wow.  That’s an unbelievable savings!  Now, instead of 200 or 300 pages printed when I get new ink, I’m getting 4,000 or 5,000 pages.  Now THAT’s a difference.  I pondered making this my #1 choice, but it came in #3 because I know I’m going to actually use #1 and #2 more than this.  But this one was a hot contender for the #1 slot this year!”

Paper Tests

There are other variables that go into the quality of a print besides the ink itself.  While the ink is the most important factor, the media that is being printed on as a dramatic effect on the quality of the overall print.  Below you will see our flier printed out in 20lb 96 brightness color, and 24lb 97 brightness respectively.  While you can hardly tell the difference in the scanned images, the thicker and whiter the paper, the more brilliant your prints will be.  For photos, we recommend using glossy or matte photo paper since that type of media is made to absorb more ink and will outshine any other type of paper.

Ink Quality Testing to Begin Immediately 2-16-2010 **Updated

Hello world.  Silo Ink has embarked on a journey to determine the quality of our ink compared with the major manufacturers’ inks. We will be using Epson, Canon, HP, and Brother inks to test documents and photos for a period of 1 month and compare results.

We need your help! We are looking for users who use original ink cartridges to print samples for us. In exchange for your kindness, we will offer you an unprecedented 25% discount.

For those who qualify, a coupon code will be mailed to you. Find out if you qualify below.

1. Must be using either a Brother, Canon, Epson, or HP printer.
2. Must currently be using ink provided by the printer manufacturer.
3. Must be able to print a picture on a 4″ x 6″ glossy photo paper.
4. Must be residing in the bay area, California.
5. Must agree to allow Silo Ink to post your first name in the appendix to show others of your participation.

Only 4 users will be selected for this test. One for each manufacturer.

Hypothesis: Silo Ink’s inks have the same quality and longevity as OEM branded inks.

Method of testing: A photo printed using OEM inks and an identical photo printed using Silo Ink’s inks will be printed on the same day and will be left near a glass window to absorb as much of the sun’s UV rays as possible. A photograph will be taken of both pictures every 7 days, with the last photograph taken on the 30th day. Each time a photograph is taken, we will post the image.

If you know someone who qualifies, please forward this opportunity to them. This test wouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes of their time, and they would be able to save a lot of money on top of never purchasing cartridges ever again!

To be considered for this experiment, please send an email to tik@siloink.com with “Silo Ink: Ink Test” in the subject line. With your help. we will answer this question that many of you are asking.

3/18/2010–Epson and Canon comparisons have begun.  We have two copies of one image using Silo Ink on an Epson and a Canon Printer, and another two copies of one image using Canon and Epson’s respective inks.  One set of images are taped to a piece of paper and placed in a window that gets a ton of sun each day.  The other set is placed in a photo album.  Check it out!
